HUMAN MOTOR

LET’S GET RID OF THE
MOTOR SHOW

The
Motor Show will take place in Bologna from 12/4 to 12/8 2009. And
there will also be the third HUMAN-MOTOR. The HM is a critical mass
all around Bologna’s streets to free our city from the car-based idea
of transport and to claim that another way is possible: an
alternative urban mobility not based on private cars.

Economic
crisis and the car industry slump were not enough to stop this event
that’s afflicting Bologna for 34 years now. Local administrations of
all sorts financed the show and its profits with about 100 million
euros to save it from bankrupt. It will therefore be kind of a “back
to the roots” edition, with a few exhibs and lot of races.

As
EARTH CITIZENS we can’t allow our politicians to promote development
in the car industry that’s incompatible with the concept of
sustainable urban transport. We ride our bikes together to claim we
disagree with this concept. Private car-based transport is no more
sustainable.

WAR
Oil is running out. Wars for resources control are everywhere in our
world, to perpetrate a status symbol that causes environmental
disasters and other wars.

SAFE
STREETS?
Car accidents in Italy cause as much as 7000 deaths and
150,000 physical or permanent mental diseased every year. Car
accidents represents the first cause of death for people under 40
year of age. In the 20th century as much as 30 million
people died after car accident and pollution. Victims in our city are
mostly elderly people and children.

POLLUTION
Air pollution cannot be eliminated by reducing CO2 emissions, as for
the most part the particulate we breathe come not from car’s exhaust
pipes, but from brakes abrasion and tires rolling on concrete indeed.

The
PM10 value since 2001 excedes the legal limit by 2 or 3 times.

Furthermore,
a car’s engine burns the same amount of oxygen produced by a 10,000
square meters forest.

INEFFICIENCY
Car is often depicted, in commercials, as a symbol of freedom.
Indeed, in big cities during busy hours car’s average speed is just a
bit higher than pedestrian’s. A car driver spends years trapped
inside traffic jams. In add to this, streets’ congestion brings new
streets, preferential lanes, pedestrian’s areas and limited-traffic
zones. These are consequences of car supremacy, not a solution to
traffic. In Bologna, bike lanes are drawn on sidewalks, subracting
room to pedestrians and eliminating bikes from the streets, that
hence remain the kingdom of cars. Furthermore, the room occupied by
cars is public space, that could be dedicate to other functions. The
average number of people inside a car is 1,2. These people uses a car
that weighs around 1000-1500 kg to move. Some researches proved that
of 10 gasoline litres, 8-9 are used to move the car and only 1-2 to
move the people inside it. To these costs we have to add upkeep,
taxes and insurance: that is to say, a big part of people’s monthly
income.

THE
RIGHT TO MOVE
In bologna, as well as other cities, there’s a
lack of alternative mobility, one that does not include
environmental, social and economic damages strongly connected with
the use of cars. Thanks to our choices we can build a human-motored
Bologna.

BICYCLE
Chosing bike, feet or public service over cars means making
something tangible to make everybody’s future better. Bicicles free
cities from smog, traffic and noise, is cheap, hence democratic,
sustainable and far from the politics of war and exploitation.

And
riding a bike produces endorphines, which are good for body and
soul…

…so
jump on your bike, Human Motor is awaiting ya!
